Read each question carefully and choose the answer that you think is most likely to be correct. You can only choose one answer for each question. When you are ready, mark your answers in the spaces on the computer screen and click on the button 'Send answers'. Good luck
Do the following examples choosing the answer that is nearest to being correct:
1. In the coordinate system below, the vectors = and = .
Which of the following vectors is equivalent to the vector
Possible answers:
- 2
2. In the coordinate system shown, the = and = .
Which of the following vectors is equivalent to .
3. Which of the vectors in the diagram is 2( + )?
4. Which of the vectors in the diagram is − 2?

6. An aeroplane flies due north in a wind blowing from the west. The pilot has to correct for this by flying into the wind. The speed of the plane is 452 km/hour in still weather and the wind blows at 60 km/hour.
By how many degrees does the pilot have to fly into the wind so that he remains on a course due north?
7. What would the speed of the plane in example 6) be relative to the ground?
8. A huge log, 10 m long and weighing 1 ton needs to be moved. To do this a 16 m long chain is fastened to each end of the log and a crane is hooked to the middle of the chain ( 8 m on each side ). The crane is used to lift the timber. The weight, 1 ton, is therefore distributed equally between the two parts of the chain, so that the forces og are equal and are together 1 ton in magnitude.
Find the force that the chain needs to withstand (2).
9. The diagram shows a vertical mast with a horizontal boom supporting a weight. The boom is supported by a wire from the top of the mast, the angle between the wire and the mast being 30°. The wire can support a weight of up to 1000 kg (see diagram).
What is the maximum weight (x) that can be hung on the boom?
10. The forces in the diagram all work on the same point .
Find the direction of the combined force measured from the x axis.
