6.     An aeroplane flies due north in a  wind blowing from the west. The pilot has to correct for this by flying into the wind. The speed of the plane is 452 km/hour in still weather and the wind blows at 60 km/hour.

By how many degrees does the pilot have to fly into the wind so that he remains on a course due north?

Possible answers:

A 7.5°
B 7.6°
C 7.7°
D 7.8°

7.     What would the speed of the plane in example 6) be relative to the ground?

Possible answers:

A 446 km/hour.
B 448 km/hour.
C 450 km/hour.
D 452 km/hour.

8.    A huge log, 10 m long and weighing 1 ton needs to be moved. To do this  a 16 m long chain is fastened to each end of the log and a crane is hooked to the middle of the chain ( 8 m on each side ). The crane is used to lift the timber. The weight, 1 ton, is therefore distributed equally between the two parts of the chain, so that the forces og are equal and are together  1 ton in magnitude.

Find the force that the chain needs to withstand (2).

9.    The diagram shows a vertical mast with a horizontal boom supporting a weight. The boom is supported by a wire from the top of the mast, the angle between the wire and the mast being 30°. The wire can support a weight of up to  1000 kg (see diagram).

What is the maximum weight (x) that can be hung on the boom?
